How do I create this?

• Oct 21, 2016 - 17:37

I am on measure 8 and seem to be stuck. Though I know about changing voices it just seems like I can't seem to do it correctly or something. The top measures at least so far are simple enough. I can't however seem to get the bottom measure, that is of 8, to be like the image. It seems simple enough however but I just can't seem to get it right. Also, it's hard to tell but I believe the last 16th note is a dotted 16th. Of course I also noticed that they are both bass clefs even though the original shows treble. Perhaps that's one reason? Anyway, any help will do, feel free to mess around with it as well. I'll be sure to change back to the treble and see if that does anything. However, I don't have the time now. So, thank you for your help. Perhaps I was just making it harder than it was. I did post it on musescore just search for "The harp that once through tara's hall". Though that wasn't exactly what I was trying to do. I was trying to post it on here instead. Though I will remove it later.

What you need in order to get that measure is "cross staff notation" - look that up in the Handbook for information on how to use it. Basically, you'll enter *all* of the upstem notes on the top staff, and *all* of the downstem notes on the bottom staff - everything in voice 1. Then use the shrotcut listed in the Handbook to move notes from one staff to the other to match the way it looks in the example. The only complication will be the second beat, which only appears to show one part instead of two. For that you'll need to hide the rests that would otherwise display. And I think the stray dot is either a typo or maybe a stain on the paper - it's not actually even positioned correctly to be a true dot (should be *between* two staff lines.

Marc's response is correct. There's also another tricky thing which is that there are 17 16th notes in the measure if you add them up, which doesn't make sense. I'd make the last of 5 16th notes be a 5-tuple for what would usually be a quarter rest, and then hide the 5 marking if you want it to look like the original

e.g.:

Selection_001.png

P.S. I optionally used the Z-style quarter rest from the master palette and hid the regular one. I also had to hide a dotted 8th rest after the first line in the treble clef the way I did it (I think there may be multiple ways of doing this and positioning rests what with 2-voices and cross-staff beaming options)

P.P.S. It would be nice to have the option to have those 8th/16th note-flags (the kind that aren't squiggly but look like cut-short beams). I've seen them in many earlier example works with that spirally F-clef.

Now that I figured that out there is yet another problem, measure 14, I can't seem to get the last 8th note in the same measure as the others. Not sure if there is a way. Though, I could be wrong as well. I'm sure this piece is going to be a very frustrating piece to put on musescore. However, I hope it will be well worth it. I have 7 pages, the last one is only 2 staves. Thanks. There is also now a link to my music below.

You've combined two measures into one. There is a measure with only a single eighth note in it but you've placed that note in the next measure. You need to create a measure that is only a single eighth note long in its actual duration. To do this, right click the measure and use Measure Properties.

Are you referring to the last 8th note? Because if that's the case that's my problem. Though if you are referring to the first, I am only going by the sheet music. That bar I put in there myself, I was unaware, at least partially,( it did link to the next note but I didn't think much of it, especially since I was merely basing it on appearance.), that it would count with that same measure as opposed to being one by itself. Though I did try that and that also selects what is behind that line (i.e. the first 8th note). Sorry if I'm being a pain. So, I'm assuming that means I'll have to do that measure all over again right?

To fix:
1. Select, then delete, those bar lines you placed in both the treble and bass.
Step 1.png
2. Select (via shift click) and cut from the first grace note to the last eighth note (i.e. include the 'C' note which is hanging at the end of the phrase).
Step 2.png
3. Right click on the eighth rest (where that 'C' note was) and paste the phrase you cut from step #2. This will take up the whole measure.
Step 3.png

Now, to fix the measure with the single eighth note (and with the common time sig.) in it:
1. Right click on a blank spot in the measure and, in Measure Properties, change the Actual Duration to 1/8.

Regards.
