Align fingerings vertically

• Jan 18, 2012 - 23:14

I wish I could select a group of notes and say "line up all the fingerings to the highest/lowest". Very hard to get good visual results by dragging.

This would of course require more than one class of fingering, so that 1-2-3-4 don't get grouped with p-a-m-i-c etc., as discussed elsewhere.

Not sure that this will directly help you achieve what you're after, but fyi: you can ctrl-click to select each fingering element you are interested in and then ctrl-click-drag to move the entire selection if you wish. Also, if you've moved some elements and don't like where they ended up, another neat trick is that you can select one (or more with ctrl-click) and then ctrl-r to reset their positions. One benefit of this mechanism is since you have decided which specific elements are selected, there's no need to distinguish by group to move or reset the position of a bunch of elements at the same time.

Yes these are great improvements over what I've been doing, thanks; sorry I hadn't noticed these features before. (I will confess that the absence of TOC or index in the doc (and its somewhat simplified focus) has left me learning many features by trial-and-error.)

no worries here -- I had ignored "reset positions" completely until I noticed a forum thread that mentioned how to use it. hmmm...I just downloaded the pdf of the handbook and searched for "reset positions" -- not found! sounds like a documentation defect. Also note there is a forum for discussing documentation, including this interesting thread: User-created documentation

It *is* in one of the main menus - Layout->Reset Position. Adding to the right click menu as well isn't a bad idea, either. Although I use this often enough that I can't imagine wanting to do so by any means other than keyboard shortcut.

Dang, there it is. Thanks. Sorry I keep missing basic things like this; despite heavy use, I'm still discovering overlooked features. (Perhaps because I'm focused on USING the tool to complete projects, rather than just kicking the tires and trying all the options. After I finish my current project, perhaps I'll pause and go through ALL the features more carefully.)

Not to worry; I've been using the this heavily for over a year and still occasionally learn something new! And asking about things you aren't seeing, and then having those questioned answered, provides a nice resource for those searching the forum for answers to the same questions. And so etimes give clues as to where the program or the documentation could be improved to make things more obvious.
