combining chord symbols with melody on one page from midi

• Feb 11, 2012 - 04:14

Newbie speaking. I have derived an arrangement from a midi file. Then I took one part (the melody) from the score. Then I created a chord chart from the score. Question is: How can I put the chord symbols on the same page with the single part other than inputting each chord manually one by one? Is there a way that I can copy from the chord chart and paste the chords on the single part? Or am I expecting too much from MuseScore?

It's not really clear what you mean here. Sounds like maybe you have three separate files here - one a full score (presumably for several instruments) created from a MIDI file, one a "part" you created from the score (using MuseScore's built in part extraction facility, or perhaps just by copying and pasting into an empty file?). And then after creating that "part", you created a third file you are calling a chord chart, by which I assume you mean a lead sheet, but I don't understand how you created this third file or how it differs from the second. Posting the actual files, and explaining how you created them, would help. Chords are indeed normally entered one by one, and I'm not understaning how else you would like to see them created. Are you saying you already added the chirds to the lead sheet, and now you want those same chords to appear on the extracted part? Since you say the "part" is actually the melody, why not simply copy the entire content of the lead sheet - melody and chords - to the part?

Ah. That chart is just for display purposes - to let you know what chords available. You aren't meant to actually do anything with that chart. Have you read the Handbook section on chord symbols? It explains how to enter chords. it,s a very simple process of typing a chird symbol and hitting space to move on to the next note/rest/beat or tab to move the next measue. Much faster than trying to copy chords pne by one from file to file!

That takes me back to my original question: "Question is: How can I put the chord symbols on the same page with the single part other than inputting each chord manually one by one? Is there a way that I can copy from the chord chart and paste the chords on the single part?" From your reply, I suppose the answer is no. Right?

I still don't understand. If you don't expect to input them one by one, how do you expect them to appear? Where else are you expecting to "copy" them from? Even if you were to copy them from the chord chart you created ipusing the plugn, you'd still have to do it one by one, and it would take ten times longer to copy chords one by one from one file to another than to simlly type them in. So I get the sense You are talking about something very different from what I am picturing. That's why I keep asking you to post sample files, as I am really having trouble understanding what you are asking here. The way you get chorda in a part is the same way you get notes to show up in a part - you make sure they are part of the score before you generate the part. If you made the mistake of generating the part before entering the chords in the score, you can either enter the chords directly into the part, or else enter the chords in the score - which is where they should have been entered in the first place - and then hit the button to generate the part again.
