Can I import a pdf file to transpose?...

I'm a viola performer and I'm looking at performing the Hadyn Cello Concerto in C Major but I need to transpose the sheet music for viola. I was wondering if it was possible to upload a score of the original cello part onto musescore and transpose it on viola.

What you are looking for is called OMR (for Optical Music Recognition) software. It's beyond the current scope of MuseScore. You can try many proprietary and expensive solution to do this, See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_OCR

There is also one free software you can try : http://audiveris.org

OMR is a very complicated task for a computer and results can vary a lot. If you don't have any good result, you can enter the score in MuseScore yourself or contract someone to do so. You may want to try to search for the score on http://musescore.com if someone already did it.

Hi smyrna,

if you have a MIDI of the piece (there are sites with lots of MIDI ready to use), you may try importing it into MuseScore; the result is usually far from perfect (the MIDI format does not contain many info, which MuseScore cannot invent), but might be somehow quicker than re-entering the whole piece.

About OMR: I tried four or five OMR packages commonly in use under Windows, commercial AND free and, according to my experience, re-enter the piece from scratch is usually faster than correcting the errors introduced by the any of them. My tests were with rather simple (2 - 3 parts) Baroque pieces; I assume that more recent works (like possibly Haydn), with a more elaborate notation, would have even more problems.
