For a), right click the 16th note -> note properties -> notehead type -> Half
For b), double click the notehead, and use the left or right arrow on your keyboard

"right click the 16th note -> note properties -> notehead type -> Half"
it does not work all the time, in the 1st bar the g's will not merge in the 2nd the f's do however...
any ideas?
thanks!

To merge the noteheads, you need to nudge on on top of the other - double-click and use the arrows.

"you need to nudge on on top of the other" thank you .but, well I did not before...
It kind of worked now, I arrowed some times and the head would move but the stem would not, and suddenly both head and stem snapped into position. Kind of funny but it is ok for now :)
cheers

You need to do the nudge any time you want two noteheads to occupy the same space. If you re-read the first responses you got, you'll see you already got that same advice some time ago, so maybe you did it and forgot.
Yes, nudging the note appears to move only the head; the stem follows when you leave edit mode, if you moved all the noteheads attached to that stem.
