Keyboard part switching between Piano and single Line

• Apr 24, 2012 - 12:11

Hi,

I'm writing some keyboard parts and need to be able to switch between piano stave (Treble + Bass with brace) and single stave (treble clef) mid piece. I can't find any way to do this.

Any suggestions or work-arounds would be much appreciated.

I'm using version 1.2 on Linux.

Many thanks,

Mark

Why not just leave rests in the bass clef stave?

It is by no means normal for a keyboard part to suddenly switch to one stave, and it would confuse the hell out of me!

But you could try using unlinked staves for the keyboard part and the use Hide Empty Staves if you really insist on such lunacy!

If it's only a short piece you can right-click on each measure in turn and un-check the Visible box in Measure Properties. Then click on the first note of the first measure where it gets back to double-stave and double-click on the barline in the Bar Lines palette to re-instate a bar line at the beginning of that bar (as barlines are at the end of the bar by default and you've made it invisible).

I suppose another, sneakier way of doing it would be to create a white rectangle in a graphics program and drag it on top of the stave you want to hide (just make sure you set the background colour of the rectangle the same as the background in MuseScore and, it it's white, don't make it transparent).

I've gotta ask, though - but why?

Actually, this is extremely common in jazz / rock / pop charts, and quite simple. Just create your part as two separate instruments rather than two staves within the same instrument, then turn on the Hide Empty Staves option under Style / General Style.

I used 2 unlinked staves and added a brace from the bracket pallette. I also pulled the bottom of the first bar down and all the bar lines became joined. (I think someone must have forseen my lunacy)

When I hid the unsued the empty staves (Style/Edit General Style/Score) the systems with empty bass clefs disapered but I was left with a tiny little brace. I made this invisble by right clicking and selecting invisble.

Mission accomplished.

Thanks for indulging my lunacy. (I have several books for portable keyboard that do this!)

Braces are the one problem with Hide Empty Staves. Generally, I'd want braces on the double staves but not on the single staves, but it's all or nothng, and a bit buggy at that. The idea of simply the ones on the single syaves is a good one; I'll have to try it next time this comes up. And make no mistake - it comes up a lot. It's really not uncommon at all for jazz charts - not lunacy at all!
