Permission for creating issues in the tracker

• Jan 17, 2017 - 19:50

I think the subject has been raised previously (can't find it).

It would stop it getting clogged with substandard reports (misuse, lacking information, no responses, etc).

I understand some like the current approach which can encourage contributions, but despite tidying it a few times the list just grows back, and everyone becomes overwhelmed.

I noticed recently that VLC seems to require permissions for theirs (perhaps granted to those who demonstrate how to use it properly); I propose that we do something similar - just for the initial post though (anyone can reply).

It could break the 'Report a bug' feature in the desktop software - perhaps it should just link to the forum.

I think it's even more common for people to ask for help on existing issues (including closed ones) than it is for them to open new ones.

MuseScore.org uses Drupal 6, and Drupal 6 is getting close from end of life. So like MuseScore.com, MuseScore.org will have to be redone from scratch, based on Drupal 8. The issue tracker is one of the most complex module of MuseScore.org (probably with the multilingual handbook) and we inherit it from Drupal. See https://www.drupal.org/project/project_issue
So far nobody ported this module to Drupal 8 and so we will need to find a solution. MuseScore is a very small project (stop comparing it to VLC...) and we are not in the business of creating issue trackers, so currently the most viable solution would be to close our current issue tracker and use github issues instead. It means that people who wants to report an issue will have to create a Github account. I believe it's not great because it will limit the number of bugs reports, but on the other hand, it will raise the bar for people to submit bug reports and we might have the quality that @chenlung expect.

In the meantime, no, I don't think it's a good idea to do any sort of new development for the issue tracker. So, don't loose your time making feature requests on that.

Removing or redirecting the "Report a Bug" link in MS help would reduce the number of bogus bug reports. People don't go to the forums and see "Issue tracker" to start a conversation about a problem, the go directly there by clicking "Report a Bug." I would remove link. If it's a legit bug, one of the contributors here would give the user a link to the issue tracker or could make a proper bug report themselves. "Ask for Help" directs the users here, where they can ask for help, which is what most people need.
