changing key signature
I have started a piece in Am, moved to A maj for a section, and now want to go back to Am again for the next part. I can't find how to put the key signature back to naturals for Am. Perhaps it's a special case as any other change would enable me to select a key signature from the palettes. I am very new to this software and can't find it in the handbook.

Not sure what your problem is, but just dragging the C-Major/A-minor signature onto a measire chnages the key for this and the following measures. See also: http://musescore.org/en/handbook/key-signature

And in case you;re not seeing it, the C major / A minor key signature should be the very last entry in the palette - bottom right hand corner.

And Style->Edit General Style->Page allows you to check/uncheck "Create courtesy key signatures" to allow you to display key signature change on the line before when it occurs at the end of a line.
If you don't want to show the naturals (say you've just changed from E Major to F minor) you can right-click on the key signature and choose to Hide Naturals.

I'm using version 1.2 and there is nothing in the bottom right hand corner of the key signature palette. I had espected to find a key signature of three naturals to reverse the three sharps in the maj key. I tried to enter the naturals manually but to no avail. Obviously, in anyother key change there would be a new key signature to enter from the palette.

My problem is that C- major / A-minor has no key signature, but to change from A major to A minor requires the neutralising of the three sharps with three naturals. This I haven't been able to do. But there must surely be a way if I could only find it.

My 1.2 palette has a final entry with no sharps and no flats. See attachment. The naturals don't appear, just blank staff lines.

Just insert the C major / A minor key signature normally. MuseScore automatically creates the necessary accidentals, unless you explicitly tell it not to (by right clicking the key signature and saying "hide naturals").

The delay in getting back to this topic has been because I've been working on another piece with no such problems.
My problem with your suggestion - I did try it - is that the return to the Am section led to the score being littered with accidentals. This is not logical as the piece is mainly in Am, with a major section in the middle.
In any other key change it would be simple, as there would be a new key signature to insert, as in the piece I've just written, which moves between Emaj and Amaj.
I'd dearly love a sloution to this, as Am is a lovely key on the guitar.
But thanks for trying. The help from more experienced users makes this a great program.

Problem solved. I watched a screencast and realised what I was doing wrong.

As you can see dragging the blank key signature from the palette to the bar automatically inserts the cancel;ling naturals.

Thank you for that screencast. I see now what I was doing wrong. I didn't have 'note input' turned on when I was dragging the key signature across, so it wasn't 'sticking'.

Actually, you don't need to have note input turned on when adding key signatures. The reason it sometimes doesn't "stick" is that you have to position the cursor carefully before letting go of the button - make sure the measure s highlighted at the moment you do the drop. This is true whether you are in note input mode or not.

This highlights the fact that it is sometimes painfully difficult to select a measure, as opposed to some of its content. A very busy measure full of voices and barlines can be reluctant to expose its underlying canvas. Perhaps there is some clever way to drill down that I haven't discovered?

Zooming in (ctrl-mouse wheel, or by other means) usually does the trick. Also, you can take advantage of the crel-arrow shortcuts to move the cursor measure by measure. Click any note in measure, ctrl-left to move cursor to beginning of that measure, shift-ctrl-right to select to end of measure. I especially like this as a way of selecting multiple measures - just shift-ctrl-right as many measures as I want. Add shift-down to extend the selection across staves within a system.

Yet another set of features I hadn't noticed. Thanks, this is very useful and intuitive (now that I know how ctrl acts in these situations). The mouse wheel zoom is going to be a real time saver, wish I'd noticed it before.
