Hi,
I can't seem to get out of edit mode. I clicked on 'esc' to no avail. It is still highlighting a whole measure instead of letting me create more notes.

You an also type N to toggle note Input on/off, or use the mouse on the corresponding button
But if you see a whole measure selected, you're surely not in note Input mode and not in edit mode either. Unless you mean that a whole measure rest is selected and you did that by double click?

I believe you have the Replaces pitches... button to the right of the note input button pressed. To unselect it you must be in note entry mode.

In order to do more than guess, we'd need more information. Pressing Esc should exit whatever mode you are in and return you to "normal" mode. You'll know this because at the bottom right of the screen, you won't see it say "Edit mode" or "Note input mode" or "Text edit mode" or any other mode. So, what are you seeing in bottom right? If you don't see any mode indication, you are in normal mode. Then, to enter notes, you need to enter "Note input mode". See the Handbook and/or the tutorial videos for more information on how to use MuseScore.
