Grace Notes and Lyrics

• Aug 12, 2012 - 19:07

1. Open attached MSCZ.

Result: The acciaccatura might be too far from the main note (see attached PDF).

Discussion: Using a MusicXML exported from the MuseScore nightly build and LilyPond 2.15.95-1's musicxml2ly feature, see the PDF produced from the LilyPond (I removed location details of the MusicXML in the latter) file (all attached). In it, the acciaccatura appears within the space of the normal note's lyric.

I don't think I'm familiar with the rules of grace notes and lyrics - what should happen?

Using MuseScore 2.0 Nightly Build (da1358d) - Mac 10.7.4.

I think I prefer the LilyPond version too.

I did the report here because I was hoping someone familiar with the rules could create a better one for the tracker.

I agree that the grace note shouldn't be too far away but I think you need to address the issue of whether the grace note is included or whether it is skipped when you are entering lyrics. The examples I've seen recently have a syllable of the lyrics on the main note but not on the grace note and the interpretation of the grace note is left up to the singer. So you might want the default to be that the grace note is skipped on entering lyrics but there are bound to be exceptions, though,

If I was entering this (in Finale for example) I would enter the lyric syllable on the grace note, because that is the first note of the syllable. Then if there is no syllable under the next note then it should not respace (in Finale).

MuseScore's spacing of lyrics is very crude, but if the lyric was entered using the method described above, the respacing issue would already be covered by the following bug report:
