Bass part in treble clef?!

• Mar 7, 2017 - 04:20

I have a score with three instruments: Bb Clarinet, Piano (Grand Staff), and Bass. In the score, the clefs are all correct. However, when I go to edit the Bass part, it is in treble clef! If I change it to bass clef, like it is in the score, it turns the clarinet part into bass clef as well!!

This is my first try with MuseScore, and while it is good at some things, it has been a great challenge. This strange thing with the bass part is extremely frustrating!

Thanks for any help and letting me vent a little!

ETA: I forgot to add I'm on the latest version of MuseScore on macOS Sierra, latest version.

My best guess is you somehow set up the score incorrectly, adding the bass part as second staff to the clarinet rather than a separate instrument. But as noted, in order to do more than guess, we'd need you to attach your score.

When I change the clefs in the clarinet and bass they only affect the staff I'm changing. I don't see anything you mentioned in you original post.

Are you dragging to a measure first measure of the instrument you want to change or selecting the first measure of the instrument you want to change then double clicking on the staff? If you are selecting all of the instruments then all the staffs will change (including the right hand of the piano) will change to bass.

What you uploaded has the bass clef with an octave below on the Bass, which is expected. This will make the score look like what a bass player expects to see.

You are on Mac version 2.0.3.1 which means your score should look like my windows score here:

The clefs are all correct and when I change one only that one changes.

Something must be else going on you are not explaining.

I've downloaded scores from every platform and they all work like they do in this score.

Thank you for taking a look at this. I am referring to the parts, not the score. The score is correct. It does indeed look like the image you posted.

If you look at the Bass part, however, it is in treble clef. When I change the Bass part (not in the score, but the actual Bass part) to bass clef, it changes the clarinet part.

Looks to me like you generated 2 clarinet parts and named one of them 'bass'. That's why the bass part shows a multimeasure rest, which the full score does not. Also, bass part playback sounds clarinet.
Go to File \ Parts and delete the bass part, then regenerate it.

Regards.

Thank you for your help. I actually created this score by using a template included with MuseScore (I believe it was the Jazz Quintet or something (I'm not at my other computer right now to check)). I changed the trumpet part to a clarinet part and deleted the drums. The Piano and Bass were already there, so I didn't change them. I believe I also used New All rather than New.

I'll try your suggestions for regenerating the Bass part. I'll report back after I try this.

Thank you again.
