Beaming Problem 2

• Mar 12, 2017 - 17:00

This is another request for help on beaming - my last problem a few days ago (Posted by Tim Kendal on March 8, 2017 - 8:44pm) was solved - thanks to those who responded.

This problem is in the same piece - please see the attached file, which is just 2 bars from the bassoon part. Both have the same rhythms & should have identical beaming.

Bar 2 is as it appears when the notes are entered. Bar 1 was originally the same.

In bar 1, you can see what I've done so far - for beats 1 2 and 4, I selected the 2 semiquaver rests, then clicked the 2nd icon in Beam Properties (Beam Middle). This worked as shown & is now correct.

Beat 3 is the problem. No rests to click on! The dotted quaver and semiquaver should be beamed, but not with anything else.

Can anyone show me how to do this please?

Actually, there is one further very small problem here. The 2 semiquaver rests on beat 1 of bar 1 are too near the beam. There should be a gap between the top of the rest and the underside of the beam. I tried to move them down by selecting both rests then adjusting the Vertical Offset, but that moves the beam as well as the rest. Strangely, if I just move one of the rests, it moves down leaving the beam 'supported' by the other rest. If you then move the other rest down, the beam comes down with it. You can do this with either of the rests. Any ideas on moving just the rests?

Many thanks in advance!

As for the rests, click the first rest and press the down arrow (once or twice as you like) then you can right arrow or click for the next one and repeat the down arrow. On beat 4 you want to use up arrow of course.

Thanks - this works as you describe. I had not realised that the stms of the beamed notes would move down with the rests until the beams were only a short distance above the notes, but that they would then stop getting shorter, so that the rests could be separate from the beams.

I think it would look better if the stems in this example were a bit longer, but I can't find how to alter this, preferably as a default. Is this possible?
