How do I have multiple notes that are different lengths play at the same time

This might be a really stupid question and I'm so sorry for wasting your time...

In my score, I'm trying to put a B held for a whole note under the entire first measure, but when I try to do it, it sees that action as replacing the entire measure. How do I have the B play under the entire measure in the piano treble clef?
