How do you link parts together?

• Mar 29, 2017 - 17:24

In a song I wrote the percussion part is hand claps and finger snaps, which are 2 different instruments on musescore, but they are meant to be played together by the same person. I would like to link these two together so when I make all the parts seperate to print off, they stay together. I can just make it a new file of course but it would be nice if this is possible. Any help?

There are two options to make it look and sound right. If the two parts do not occur at the same time you can do an instrument change as needed. If the part consists of something like clap, clap, snap, clap in 1/8th note you can use 2 voices. One with the clap and one with the snap. You then need to make MuseScore think it has 2 instruments to play. It's a little convoluted, but here it goes.

Create a single line of trumpet music with 2 voices, hand claps for one voice and snaps for the other.

To change the instrument right click the staff and type the name you want for the staff in the Part Name and instrument names (long and short).

Enter staff text for the first measure, it doesn't matter what it says. Right click the text and select staff text properties. click the 1 on the first line and keep the text normal. Click the 2 on the second line and change the text (through the drop down) to muted. Do bother with the 3rd and 4th lines. Click OK.

open the mixer (F10) and under the Part name you used above, using the drop down change trumpet to clap (if voice 1 is clap or snap if that's voice 1). Then in the line below change muted trumpet to the other instrument (snap or clap). Close the mixer (F10 will do this) and your instrument will sound like you want.

You can now make the staff text you made invisible if the musicians do not need it by clicking it and pressing the v key.
