Channel numbers

Can someone out there help me?
I don't even know if this comment/request is in the right place.
My question involves channel numbers.
I have been using a wonderful little programme called MusicWorks - sadly no longer available.
where channel numbers could be assigned and viewed.
Am I right in thinking Musescore assigns channel numbers in order per clef?
and that this cannot be altered and can only be checked by exporting the midi file to a programme that displays the channel number?
