In the edit->preferences under the Update tab there is a check box. It will not automatically upgrade, but it will take you to the correct page to upgrade when a new version is released.
If you are on Windows 10, you can install MuseScore from the Windows Store now (free install) via https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/musescore-2/9p0cnr9rwzsx This will always put you on the latest greatest version, at least for the 2.x series. So no more update hassle.

Again the question whether to mention it on the download page, now that some teething Problems got resolved?
Also I notice that it reads:
Language supported
English (United States)
Français (France)
That's a bit thin isn't it?

Why has the Windows Store link been moved into the "Old and unsupported versions" section?

Because the Windows Store still doesn't offer 3.0, only 2.3.2
