Horizontal alignment of stems and note heads

• May 10, 2013 - 18:25

1. Open attached MSCZs (produced in 1.3).

Result: The stems of both sets of notes aren't horizontally aligned.

Discussion: I'm not sure if this is a bug. This applies to both multi-voice and cross-staff notes. Minims have different-sized note heads compared to crotchets and values below. Perhaps the bug is that the note heads aren't aligned in accordance with the stem position, or the note head and stem should shift position to avoid touching each other?

First of all, I can hardly see any difference between the two samples (PDF's), except of course the hidden rests: could you elaborate?

The only problem I see in the sample is the akward clash between the minim chord and the dotted crochet at the beginning. The difference in width between minim head and crochet head is marginal; the real problem is that the two voices should either:

1) have different stem directions
OR
2) if this is not the case (for instance for stylistic reasons), the lower one should be shifted to the right and made separate from the upper.

I believe that in no case the two stems should overlap.

Ideally, the program should manage the shift automatically; in practice, as the default solution for MS is to use different stem directions, I am not suprized it relies on manual intervention (this is also a score created with a previous version, which adds its own complexities).

This for the "multi-voice" part. I do not see any evident "cross-staff" issue there.

Thanks,

M.

Hi

I don't think there are any hidden rests.

I am indeed referring to the stems of, primarily, the first chord. The chords seem to look the same in both scores, but I was demonstrating that this clash can happen when either of these functions (multi-voice and cross-staff) are utilised.

The original score does present the stems in opposite directions, but topic is for cases when that doesn't happen.
