Musescore mistakenly suspends pulseaudio on Ubuntu
By default Ubuntu has mawk installed instead of gawk and so Musescore suspends pulseaudio when it does not need to.
A temporary fix is to install gawk, however this should work out of the box.
Other people have had this issue:
http://musescore.org/en/node/22179
Output of terminal when starting without gawk:/usr/bin/musescore: 11: /usr/bin/musescore: gawk: not found
Suspending PulseAudio

do the nighly builds have the same issue?
It's a bug downstream at the ubuntu package side not in MuseScore itself. Which version of MuseScore are you using? It seems they solved the issue when packaging MuseScore 1.3. See https://launchpad.net/~mscore-ubuntu/+archive/mscore-stable/+sourcepub/…
Can you check so we can close this issue here? since we can't do much about it anyway...
I am running 1.3 as is the person in the thread I linked to.
Musescore 1.3 does depend on mawk, but for some reason it still tries to run gawk
There is a bug report here for debian http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=667845
I can't find one for ubuntu, you might want to report it here https://bugs.launchpad.net/~mscore-ubuntu
As I said, we can't do much here...
