Musescore won't accept dotted quarter notes in 3/8 time

When I create a song with 3/8 time signature, Musescore will not accept dotted quarter notes from the computer keyboard, pressing 5+period. I have to leave the edit mode, and select the note, then click on the dot in the note entry palette. That is a pain when the song is comprised almost entirely of dotted quarter notes.

Then there is something else wrong because I just created a new piano score in 3/8 using MS 1.3, entered note entry mode, types 5 dot and started entering notes. I could enter notes from both keyboard and mouse.
Is your dot key being recognized? Can you enter quarter notes at the beginning of each measure, then exit note entry mode and, selecting each note, type a dot to make them dotted quarters?
