Midi keyboard connection

• Sep 23, 2013 - 12:25

I have an older midi keyboard for which I have just purchased a new usb-midi connection having in/out connectors at one end and a usb connector at the other. The instructions tell me to set the music software Midi In Midi Out devices to "USB Audio Device". I cannot find this on Musescore. Can you tell me how to find it please?

Also,
Providing more information (what operating system, Musescore version, type of cable connectors) may help.

Assuming you have loaded the driver, and the OS recognizes which usb port the keyboard is plugged into, most problems seem related to incorrect 'in - out' connections, or not switching your digital piano on before opening up MuseScore.

As far as note input, Musescore should recognize the keyboard when you first highlight a rest in a score and then play a note.

Many thanks for your reply. The cable connections are correct with In to Out and Out to In. I am using a HP laptop with Win 8. The USB Midi cable converter has a built-in driver: 1 in + 1 out Midi interface; 16 Midi input channels and 16 Midi output channels. But I have had no message about the driver being recognised. On Edit>Preferences>I/O> Choose port Midi input I only have MMSystem, USB 2.0-Midi.

PS I'm on Version 1.3

I'm not sure of what you mean by: "The USB Midi cable converter has a built-in driver."

Is it an adapter that looks like the USB-Adapter (midi-to-game port-to-USB) in this post? http://musescore.org/en/node/17740

Also, although I am using Windows XP:
1. With the midi keyboard off, and the computer turned on, plug the midi keyboard into the usb port of the computer and then power up the midi keyboard.
Do you hear any Windows 'device connect' sound? Does a hardware icon appear on the taskbar, for instance?

2. If you can access the device manager:
Does a USB-MIDI Driver show up anywhere? (See attachment, for example)

3. If you have a soundcard - check that nothing is muted in the play control.

4. Do you have another program with which to check midi keyboard playability?

Yippee! It's working, though I'm not sure why! Just to let you know, I followed all your instructions:
1. Instructions with the adapter said it had a driver included.
2. The two In/Out fittings run into a 2.5" X 1.25" black fitting and from the other end the cable is fitted with a USB plug.
3. No sound card that I know of - just the standard Win 8 sound system.
4. In Device Mg there are 9 USB devices: two generic, two Intel, four USB including two root hubs and another HC1. I don't know which does what but all these record as operating correctly.
5. I followed your instructions at (1) on your email and heard a couple of musical notes when the USB was plugged in but before the keyboard was switch on.
Then when I went into Musescore it operated correctly from the keyboard. So perhaps it was due to your instruction at (1). In any case, many thanks for all your attention and help.

I've got the same problem as keith2.
Casio CTK-601 with MIDI I/O. Adapter cable sounds identical to keith2's.
Macbook Intel 2.0GHz running 10.6.8
Garageband 4.1.2 recognises MIDI input. MuseScore 1.3 doesn't.
MuseScore Preferences> I/O >
Choose PortMIDI input interface >
menu has only one option: "CoreMIDI,VIEWCON.. Port 1"
which appears to be active
I have unplugged, replugged, Quit, Opened etc a number of times but MuseScore just won't respond to MIDI input.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi, I got Musescore 1.3 running on a Linux Fedora 19 and I got the same problem. The OS seems to recognize the MIDI-USB cable because I see it in the Jack Audio Connection Kit... but I tried to choose the output in every possible channel, including making device connections in the audio connection kit and I can't get this working. The cable and the keyboard are OK because I used it with other software (i.e. Encore) seems to be a problem with some OS or MuseScore setup.

Any help will be appreciated

MuseScore does not support MIDI output. If you really want to use the keyboard's built in sounds, you will have to do so using Jack - meaning, you configure Musescore to talk to Jack and configure Jack to talk to your keyboard. See http://musescore.org/node/3267.

But if your reason for wanting to use this keybiard for output is just to get better sounds than the MuseScore defaults, be aware you can get better sounds more easily by simply installing a better soundfont - see Soundfont in the Handbook.

Hi Marc,
Interested in your explanation about MIDI output. Can you give me any clues about MIDI input?
