Tempo changes after a few measures

• Nov 30, 2013 - 22:05

I just started entering "Moonlight Sonata", and when it plays, the tempo slows down on the second beat of the third measure. I have no idea why. I have attached the score (first page only - the rest is just empty measures so far.)

I tried to attach the file (less than 3KB) but it's not here. I'll have to see what I did wrong.

Just guessing, but:

Click on the first note.
Add a tempo Marking.
Rt. Click on the tempo marking.
Select "all Similar".

I suspect an invisible tempo marking will appear.

You may have to check "Make visible".

Delete them.

Repeat step 1 and 2 adding the tempo you want.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. When I added "Largo" as text at the beginning, then selected similar, set visible (but nothing showed up), and deleted, it actually played faster at the place where it had slowed down before. I haven't spent much time on this score anyway, only three measures, so I'll just start over. But I'd like to know the answer before I invest a lot of time and then have this problem arise later. I just finished a score of 71 measures, two staves of piano (the bass with two voices), a staff for male and female voices (one staff with two voices), and one staff each for violin and cello, and I've only discovered Musescore ten days ago, so that was quite ambitious for a beginner. Maybe I need a break!

It gets is easier as you do more.

As to this, I am stumped. If you still have a copy that shows the original problem, post a copy here so the developers can find out what happened as it sounds like a bug.

Congratulations on your achievement so far.

Best,

Most likely you neglected to press the Attach button after selecting the file.

I too am guessing a hidden tempo change, but select all then delete should have fixed. Maybe attempting to set visible messed up the selection, so try again without the set visible step.

I will try to attach the score again.

I did go back and try the suggestion above. First, I created a tempo text at the start of the score. Then I selected it and right-clicked "select similar", but nothing showed up. However, the only option was to "set invisible", and no option for "set visible". But I clicked "set invisible" anyway, and the text I had just entered did *not* go away. But at least then there was the option to "set visible" (where the "set invisible" had been - it toggles). But when I clicked "set visible" it did nothing.

I will try to attach again here............. Moonlight_Sonata_Page_One.mscz

I'm not at my computer so I can't check myself, but as i said above, it's clicking *delete* (the actual "delete" key on your keyboard, not a menu item) that should delete any selected tempo markings, visible or not. Don't mess with setting anything visible or not visible - that has nothingt to do with it. Not saying this for sure is your problem, but you might as well follow the steps to be sure. Again, do this exactly - nothing else:

1. Add tempo text
2. Right click
3. Select all similar
4. Delete (Fn-Delete if you are pn Mac)

Btw, when you hit "set invisible" before, it *did* make the marking invisible - but invisible markings still show up on screen as greyed out.

OK, well, actually, when I added the text "Adagio" and then selected it (it was blue) and then selected all similar items, no other text for tempo appeared, in blue or grey. Anyway, with "Adagio" still blue (selected) I clicked "set invisible", but again the color did not change to grey. So, with it still blue (selected) I clicked on "set visible" and it remained blue. Then I hit the DEL key on the keyboard, and nothing happened.

But it's fixed now, (see other reply) and I have just completed the score. Thanks again for your replies!

There is no "show invisible". There is only "set invisible", or, if you have already clicked that, then the only option is "set visible". And if you click that, the that option once again becomes "set invisible" and so forth. In other words, there is only one space in the drop-down list for either "set visible" or "set invisible". They never appear together in the drop-down list, but rather they toggle back and forth as you click the one or the other.

Thanks. I did not see that in the display menu. I was only looking at the right-click drop-down menu. But, as it happens, it still didn't reveal any hidden tempo text(s). I think it was just a bug or a corrupted measure. But anyway I was able to complete the score. I appreciate everyone's help here. As I begin my second week of using Musescore, I'm sure I'll have more questions!

Fwiw, I wasn't really thinking there were likely any tempo markings that were invisible in the sense of being normal tempo markings that had been set invisible. Any such markings would still have displayed, in grey. I was thinking more in terms of tempo markings that had no text at all, or maybe only space character. That's why I kept advising you not to mess with the set visible command at all - I think it was just confusing the issue. A marking with no text would not have display when you did the select all, and of course there would have been nothng to make visible. It turns put that was not the case this time, but this does happen, so if you do see this again, please do try my advice - select all similar, immediately hit delete without messing with visibility settings.

It's good to know for future reference. The first day I ever used Musescore, I remember I somehow clicked on the page while in note entry mode and somehow added a rest to a measure, but at the same time I must have dragged it to the edge/bottom of the page. So, even though it wasn't in place on the staff, it was still being played as if it were, and I couldn't figure out why my beat count was off. Took me a while to figure it out. Now I'm very careful to hit "N" before I go clicking menus, etc. I am really enjoying Musescore. In less than two weeks using it, I have learned a lot. Yesterday I entered the song "All By Myself" (Celine Dion's hit) and I really didn't have much trouble figuring it out. This song has lots of tricky parts: Tempo changes, key change, time signature change, triplets, multiple voices in some measures and so forth. A good challenge but I learned a lot by doing it.

The people here are very helpful. Glad to be part of it!

I was having a similar problem. I had create Tempo text in more that one place but then deleted the text. The problem I created was that the tempo changed but there was no text (visible or invisible) to click on to change.

I create a new Tempo Text at the beginning of the score:
Create -> Text -> Tempo
Then I selected the newly created tempo text and right clicked on it and selected:
Select -> More...
You will find check boxes for
same staff
same voice
same system

I picked "same system" to find ALL tempo changes in the composition

Then pick below those options
Subtract from selection

This seemed to remove all tempo changes so that I could go back and insert them properly.

In one of your posts, you said you entered the tempo text, was that entered as straight text, or through Create-> Text-> Tempo?
Did you select the tempo through Display-> Play Panel?
These seem unlikely.
Just trying to get my head around your score.

I copied and pasted your piece to a new score, selected Lento (48bpm) as the tempo, and it worked as expected.
See attachment.
Hope this helps.
