Duplicate Notes with midi keyboard entry

• Jan 10, 2014 - 00:54

If I enter notes using my computer keyboard, then I get one note on the score for each note entered. If I enter notes using my midi keyboard then I get 2 notes for each note entered. E.g. if I press the C key once, then I get 2 C notes in my score, one on top of the other. I have an Alesis QX61 keyboard. I have tried altering the velocity curve, and using the velocity lock, but it makes no difference. I cannot see a setting in Musescore that will affect the duration of the note entered.

I am NOT trying to play a chord. I am just trying to enter one note at a time, and have one note appear on the score. Why am I getting duplicates?

I can only guess your keyboard has been configured to send two MIDI messages for each note - perhaps transmitting on two separate channels?

As for duration, see Note Entry in the Handbook. The duration of a note is set before entering it, by clicking one of the icons on the toolbar or using the corresponding keyboard shortcut.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I had been working on the supposition that I was holding the midi keyboard key down too long, resulting in a duplicate note. You were right about the channels - we had the keyboard configured so that the right hand transmitted on Channel 1 and the left hand on Channel 2 (Overture accepts left hand and right hand input via Channels), with an overlap on the centre 5 notes. For some reason, Musescore was accepting the notes played as being on both channels, even if the note was played on the channel designated for the right hand side of the keyboard. Once I configured a global channel (0) and for the whole midi keyboard (left and right) to be on the one channel, the duplicate notes no longer appeared.

Thank you for your help - it is sometimes difficult to pinpoint whether the problem(s) are due to the software or the midi controller - and therefore which forum to pose your question on! Maybe we need a 'grey area' forum! :)
