Instrument Range/Key/Playback/stem Error

• Oct 7, 2017 - 09:08

I really do not know how to explain this problem.

I am running Musescore 2.0.2 on an Asus Flip Chromebook (armv7l) which is running KDE Plasma (Kubuntu). When I notate on certain instruments, like the bari sax, every note is red even when it is in the correct range. When placing the note it plays the sound correctly, but when using the playback feature every note that is "out of range" does not playback. I've opened staff properties and have seen that the octave for the instrument is set to 10, which is obviously wrong for a bari sax. Whenever I set the octave back down to 0 the key of the instrument changes. In this case it changes the bari sax from the key of Eb to Ab, which no Eb bari sax player would know how to transpose. After changing the octave to 0 the notes no longer appear out of range and the playback works fine, but when the octave is set to 0 the playback is at octave 10. A bari sax or not even an alto sax will sound this high. Also when notating any note the stems become super long and I do not know how too fix it. So to make this clearer here are the problems.

  1. All notes are shown out of range (red notes) with no playback sound for that instrument. Instrument octave set to 10.
  2. After setting instrument octave back to 0 the instrument key changes.
  3. Can't change instrument key back.
  4. After setting instrument octave back to 0 the playback sound is higher in pitch (Octaves higher).
  5. When notating stems show extremely long.

I am running MuseScore 2.0.2.
I am running KDE Plasma (Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS) on a ASUS Flip Chromebook.
It has a armv7l achitecture if that matters.

My mistake. I am running 2.1.
I should have explained better what is actually happening. Whenever I change the octave from 10 to 0 it does not keep the same key nor pitch. Before on 10 a middle G sounds like the correct middle G (Concert B), but appears out of range and will not playback. No matter which octave I put it on... the pitch always changes randomly and does not stay a G (Concert B), as it should since notes octaves apart still have the same sound, but higher or lower. Whenever I put the octave on 0 and input a middle G the pitch is significantly higher and is a random pitch each time, not actually middle G (Concert B). I tried fixing this through changing the transposition, but it seems as if it is doing the same thing. Whenever I change the transposition it is random transpositions. It's basically Russian roulette with pitches... It is random... I just want to input notes normally with the correct pitches also with playback.
Any help would be appreciated.

Here is an update to the issue. It seems as if it is a error in the staff properties. Whenever I add new instruments and add a note, the sample pitch is correct, but it is registering out of range. Whenever I change the transposition or octave in the staff properties it seems to randomly change the transposition and octave. Whenever I change octave it does not change to the correct octave that is shown. Likewise when I change the transposition it does not transpose to what is selected. I can chose to transpose a major third up and each time I click apply it randomly jumps around in transpositions and never actual transposes correctly.

It seems either you have an incorrectly customized / corrupt instruments.xml file, or perhaps you are misunderstanding how the Concert Pitch mode is intended to work, or else perhaps you have tried changing the transposition after already generation a linked part, which does cause some glitches. It's not clear why you are messing with the transposition setting at all - that should never normally be necessary. In order to help better, we'd need you to post your score and steps to reproduce the problem.

It's a strange problem, but I only messed with the transposition to see if it had anything to do with the problem. I've used Musescore on Windows and have never had problems with it. When I add new instruments, even without messing with anything, all of the normal playable notes are showing as out of range (red) and will not playback. The instrument octave is also default at 10. I am thinking it does have something to do with the instruments.xml file. I've used Musescore for quite a while on windows, but ever since I've switched to linux I've had problems. I'll upload the score so you can see exactly what is happening.

Yes, it will be easier to say once you upload the score. Maybe also check your instruments.xml - go to Edit / Preferences / Score and be sure all you see is :/data/instruments.xml and not some custom version on your own file system. I've used MuseScore with no problems on Linux for years as have many others, so it definitely isn't some general Linux issue, but it could indeed be something about the particular installation on your system. Are you running the AppImage version? If not, from where did you install it?
