Lilypond input on the fly

• Aug 29, 2009 - 18:29

I can see this is a very hard request, but... It will can be a Lilypond exportation 'on the fly', in order to read and eventually edit the Lilypond input created by MuseScore? Or the possibility of running MuseScore in a 'Lilypond mode', using it as a GUI?

Thanks in advance!, and please excuse me if I was unclear...

Another project called Canorus has this as a goal and has a mode where the lilypond code shows in the bottom portion of the window and the score shows at the top. Demeno also works as a GUI to LilyPond although "on the fly" editing of the lilypond code is not fully supported.

This is actually quite difficult to do and made more difficult by the complexity of the LilyPond notation (which also tends to change somewhat with each release). The direction of MuseScore is WYSIWYG instead.

Although LilyPond export has small improvement with each release of MuseScore there is no one working on LilyPond input. If you have skills or interest in coding feel free to jump on board!

I was indeed thinking to Canorus when I wrote the first post. Regarding MuseScore, I find MuseScore better and more powerful (if I can say so) than Canorus, however; and I'd appreciate very much a functionality similar to that. I'd also like switching to a 'Lilypond GUI' mode - more limited, but more clean in regard of Lilypond input. But I'm aware of the difficult of this.

Yes, Lilypond language changes very frequently. In my humble opinion, with very complex pieces of music, a two-step exportation in MusicXML, and from MusicXML to Lilypond (with the musicxml2ly Lilypond function) works better than the simple MuseScore to Lilypond exportation. MusicXML exportation maintains the lyrics (not perfectly), and above all creates a clearer, more linear organization of the parts - that I find a bit uncomfortable to edit in MuseScore produced code.

Alas, I'm not able to coding anything! All what i can do is suggesting what I find useful in my not-very-good English...
