Tie
I am trying to enter a tie and it will not let me from the beginning note until the last note I had entered

Maybe you want to add a slur (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/slurs) and not a tie (https://musescore.org/en/handbook/ties), be aware of the difference.
Ties are only possible between adjacent notes of the same pitch, I guess you want a slur, see https://musescore.org/en/handbook/slurs
