Using voices (layers)

• Dec 27, 2017 - 01:48

When I try to add the alto voice, scrolling backward using the arrow back button, hit voice two, it constantly flips back to voice one and I can't get the second voice to work. Help. (I am a piano teacher and usually use Sibelius, but I am taking a class and we are all using Muse Score so that we will be on the "same page". I have my students use Muse Score and although I don't think they will need voices for a long time, I need to know this program so that I can help them.

I am trying to add a second voice.

"Move cursor back to start of section: When you have finished entering a section of voice 1 notes, press the ← key repeatedly to move the cursor, note-by-note, back to the first note of the section; or alternatively use Ctrl+← (Mac:Cmd+←) to move the cursor back one measure at a time. Or else you can simply exit note input mode (press Esc) and click directly on the first note.

Enter voice 2 notes: Make sure you are in note-input mode and that the voice 1 note at the beginning of the section is selected. Click on the "Voice 2" button Voice 2 button (on the right of the toolbar), or use the shortcut Ctrl+Alt+2 (Mac: Cmd+Option+2). Enter all the lower voice notes (down-stem)."

When I tried to enter voice 2 notes, it flips back to voice 1 and overwrites.

Don't switch to voice 2 until you have already moved the cursor where you want it. Once you've switched to voice 2, it will stay there as you enter notes, but indeed, if you try moving the cursor to a location that doens't have anything in voice one, it will have no choice but to switch to a voice that does have notes.
