MuseScore Deleted My File?

• Jan 16, 2018 - 04:35

My entire file has gone missing! I have found a backup version that does not contain the last ten measures I had been working on, which were very detailed, complex, and difficult to replicate, so I really need to find this file! I replicated the circumstances with a test file and the exact same thing happened, but this time I copied the messages I received so I could be as accurate as possible describing this. But I still don't know how to find the missing file!

First, I tried to save. I then got this message:

Renaming temp. file to failed:
No error

So I tried to "save as" but I used the same file name, overwriting the previous file. This worked fine and the system didn't complain. Then, after a few more measures, I tried to save again. I then got this message:

The following file is locked:
C:/Users/[User name]/Documents/1Documents/1Scores/test.mscz
Try saving to a different location.

So again I used "save as" and saved it under the same file name. After a while of doing this, hitting save as instead of save, I made sure I saved and closed MuseScore. Then I tried to open the file from my documents and got this message:

Cannot read file C:\Users[User name]\Documents\1Documents\1Scores\test.mscz:
Access is denied.

Then the file I was trying to open completely disappeared before my eyes. Literally winked out of existence. I have searched in many places, including VirtualStore, Program Files x86, bin in MuseScore, and my recycle bin, just to name a few. There was a file saved under test.mscz.temp, and deleting the .temp did get me a backup version, but as I said it was missing the last several measures. The original file has completely been erased from that folder, and I even searched my entire PC for it. I know it's probably impossible to find and/or gone forever, but if someone could help me I would be really grateful. This was a lot of work that I lost and I don't know if I will be able to redo it all. I've spent the last hour crying over this stupid score, so if I could find it, I would be so thrilled.

Hmm. First, in hindsight, I'd say if you experience a glitch like this - seems somehow a write error or something else OS-related went wrong during a save - I'd recommend doing save as to a different file name. Do that twice, then open the other one to make sure it's good, then close and reopen MuseScore.

As for how to recover, we would need to know more about what is going on. You say you were able to reproduce this with a test file. Can you detail precise step-by-step instructions to do so?

The error messages you are receiving make it seems like maybe you don't have write permission in the folder you are trying to save to, or else the file is locked (perhaps open in another program, like perhaps a zombie MuseScore process that failed to exit.
