Why is this added?
I can't seem to get rid of these extra entries. It's my first composition. I've tried to delete the measure, started a new score. I can't for the life of me, figure out how to get rid of this. Please see the attached picture. What is on top is what I'm referring to. What's on the bottom is how I'd like it to be.

The grayed rests are invisible and will not be printed and can be suppressed on the display by using the view menu and removing the check from Show invisible.
To make the measure an 8th note long, right click the measure and change the actual duration to 1/8 rather than the default 2/2 which is the nominal duration.

So you want a pickup measure or anacrusis, a measure that is shorter than the time sig suggests.
