crescendos do not affect a single note, it takes several notes for the effect to be noticed rather than an abrupt dynamic change. The only way to get a gradual crescendo is to make it span a large number of notes. It's usually only somehat smooth with 16th or shorter notes at a moderate or faster tempo.
