thanks but adds an extra staff for the entire piece. I just want to add a single measure ABOVE the normal staff to provide an explanation tot he abbreviation on the staff

Use the Image capture tool for the example staff and insert a picture of it into a frame.

You can hide all the empty bars.
Go to Style>General: select "Hide empty staves".
