Multiselect should allow setting of Text Properties

• Jul 3, 2018 - 16:40

Perhaps I am missing something? For Stave text when you multiselect several text items which share properties, should you not be able use Text Properties to change property values for all the selected items?

Yet when I manually multiselect Stave text items and apply a change of Font Size, it is applied only to the last-selected item. And the same applies to Select > All Similar Elements in Same Stave (applies only to the first-selected item). This quite disappointing... does anyone else share my frustration?

Any workaround?

This is a consistent behavior for any items that are right clicked after a multi-selected item in versions 2.x. It's true of text, lines, hairpins, articulations & ornaments, time signatures... You get the idea. My guess is that this is to prevent uncertainty if you click a time signature (or something else) in the midst of a bunch of staff text being selected.

In the case of text, the idea was to avoid confusion over what to do if the text styles of elements differed to begin with.

Anyhow, there is almost always a better way to do whatever it is you are trying to do. For instance, if you just globally want all "pizz" markings to be smaller, simply create one the way you like - including the playback effect - then add it to your palette as described in the Handbook under "Custom palettes". Or, if there are other staff texts of a similar nature you'd also like smaller, but don't want all staff text to be smaller, simply create a new text style (hit "New" within the text style dialog) and assign it as desired using the Inspector. Or if you want all staff text smaller, just edit the text style for staff text. Or if it's just a handle of elements you want affected, do it once then copy/paste the text to the other locations.

Thank you, but I created such custom text elements a long time ago, in the Text section of a Custom palette (with channel 1 set to pizzicato or arco). And I think it was your very helpful suggestion... ;-)

My post above concerned MusicXML imports, where all the stave text often arrives with the wrong font size. And I do know that I could probably edit the MSCX file, but I felt that it shouldn't be necessary - this is something which IMO could and should be handled in the UI. Perhaps by limiting any multi-action to elements of the same Text Style?

If you want all staff text smaller, as I said, just edit the staff text style - right click any staff text, Text Style, reduce size. or if you only want some staff text smaller, use the custom text style method.
