Add the text as with any other tempo marking - eg, select a note, press Alt+T. To get MuseScore to simulate the playback effect, you can either manually enter a slower tempo, or try the following plugin: https://musescore.org/en/project/tempochanges

Hi, just a correction, at least for a PC, it should be ctrl+T rather than alt. Thanks so much for this shortcut!! I have been working hours adding text and always clicking on the "text" palette, then "staff text" and finally, triple clicking on the staff text to highlight those words so I can put in my own text. This is a life saver!!!

No, Ctrl+T adds staff text, for a tempo text it is Alt+T.
But indeed a rit. Text is rather a staff- or maybe better a system text (Shift+Ctrl+T)

Tempo text was Alt+T back in 2018 when I wrote that. But not long after, the Tools menu was added, and that took over Alt+T. So tempo text is now Alt+Shift+T. Ctrl+T is staff text, as mentioned - very different - but that has always been Ctrl+T.
