Tabs for fretted instruments - fingering optimisation

• Jul 18, 2018 - 10:16

Hi!

I transcribe a lot of music and make arrangements, via the wonderful MuseScore, for my Ukulele group.
One issue that I am finding is that when the music is in a high register, e.g. all the notes have a pitch of A4 or higher, then MuseScore will put them all on the 1st (A) string. This can mean having to play notes anywhere from the 1st to 12th or 14th fret - not easy, or practical! I have attached a score for Finlandia - the 'Uke High' part shows how I have forced notes onto the lower strings to make them more playable.
Is there a way to 'optimise' the fingering so that the notes can be spread across all the strings, grouped to a small set of frets (say 5)? At present I have had to manually drag tab positions from one line on the Tab stave to another to force them into the same group of frets.

Instead of drag fret numbers, you can select some of them (let's say, fret 5, first string) by holding on Ctlr key, and do then Ctrl + Down arrow.

Or, a relative recent and useful feature: right-click on the same fret 5 -> select -> More -> tick "Same pitch", "Same string", "Same staff", and eventually "In selection" if you choose a range selection -> Ok -> Ctrl + Down

Result: with one shot, all the frets 5 of your score (or a selection of measures) move to the fret 10, second string.
