Large Measures

• Sep 11, 2018 - 20:34

I have this VERY complicated piece I arranged for piano, and I have almost every detail of it complete. However, the largeness of the measures seems to waste a lot of room in the piece. I want to be able to reduce the width of the measures but still have it large enough to read.

This piece is an attempt for the world's hardest piano piece.
Thanks,

You can reduce the scaling as shown above, and/or decrease stretch (same menu) to reduce space between notes in a passage. If you continue to have trouble feel free to attach your actual score (not just a picture) and we can assist better.

As stated earlier, the best way to make more fit on a page is to use Layout->Page settings... and lower the value for scaling. You will then need to make a lot of adjustments to make it continue to look right. One thing that jumps out at me is that the spacers will need to be redone, since there are some measures moved to other pages. You will also want to double click the frame on page one and drag the box at the bottom of it down so all of the music will start on page 2. hint: double clicking right edge of the frame is easier than the bottom.

I don't understand why you put the invisible notes on other staves like in measures 75&76. Also, pedal lines always apply to all staves in an instrument. Adding them to other staves in unnecessary. You have one instrument written on three staves in places, which is no problem.

You don't say which measures specifically you'd like to change, but if it were me, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to make things more difficult by making them more cramped. But if you want fewer page turns - never a bad idea - I'd start by reducing the overall music size as Mike suggests, but only ever so slightly, since you don't want to make it harder to read. Then I'd maybe reduce the overall music spacing ever so slightly, in Style / General / Measure.

Reducing the staff space to 1.6mm and the spacing factor to 1.1 gets you down from 28 to 25 pages. Not sure it's worth it.

BTW, you seem to have a lot of unnecessary staff spacers, forcing more vertical space than is needed. In fact, you've got them on practically (?) every system. If the goal is simply to change the default spacing, better to use the settings in Style / General / Page.
