MS3: bogus whitespace under lyrics
Take a look at https://musescore.com/user/1685616/scores/5363014 (in MS2). Open this in MS3, say "don't reformat", but a spurious gap of about 7 staff lines appears under the bottom lyric line.

It is the min. bottom margin of 7.5sp for lyrics (instead of the 3.0 default of 2sp)
Needed in 2.x to keep them appart from the high tenor notes, not needed in 3.0 due to autoplace

Perhaps I am confused, then, about what "don't reformat" means? Is it not a bug that it cannot refrain from reformatting this aspect of the score? Is it not reasonable to expect it not to introduce artifacts?

It doesn't say "don't reformat", it says "don't reset positions"

So this has to be documented as an incompatibility, and a manual process that must be applied to all scores with lyrics when migrated (@$@#!?) ?

Not really an incompatibility, but with autoplace these margins have a different meaning, leave this much space between lyrics and other elements below, before, in 2.x, leave this much space to next staff below

So yes, it mostly is best to not just reset positions but also style (via menu)

I see, that's not so unreasonable, but it's going to pop up again and again as a bug if not documented clearly (although no one will ever find or read the documentation).

One advantage of documenting it: we can easily point to that rather than having to explain time and time again ;-)
So some "How to convert 2.x scores to 3.0" might be called for
Those 7.5sp min bottom lyrics margin is not the 2.x default BTW (that'd be 4sp)

In short, no it is not reasonable to expect everything single manual adjustment that was performed in 2.x to be automatically converted into the correct equivalent in 3.0. Simple things will work, but special tricks like you employed here - not the normal way to get extra space when needed - won't necessarily have the same special side-effects.
