Can't (easily) add notes to chord that crosses measure?

• Jan 6, 2019 - 19:57

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it appears that in Note mode I cannot add a note to a chord using either the normal Shift+(letter) method or cursor click.

Repro(s):
1. 3/4 time
2. add notes to fill first two beats

Attempt 1:
3. Focus is on rest on treble clef; press N to make sure you're in note mode.
4. Press 6 to set half-note
5. Press C to get cross-measure tied quarters (or any note)
6. Press Shift-E (with intention of adding another half note to the spanning half note, but which note is immaterial)
Result 1:
Only the second quarter is affected--a quarter note is added to it. Maybe kind of makes sense since there really are two notes there (though they're tied).

Attempt 2:
7. Undo so the just-added quarter note is gone.

8. Move mouse pointer back to the first measure, where you pressed C to add the half note
9. Make sure you're still in Note mode, and half note length is active
10. Move mouse pointer to the start of the spanning note (3rd beat) and you see the blue note cursor moving as you select a note
11. Click to place any note (E in my example)
Result 2:
Note is replaced rather than added

Note: I just tried the same thing in ms2, and this is not a regression. Here's what I expected to get (at least from the second method). To get this I added a quarter for the 1st beat of the second measure and then added a quarter to the 3rd beat of the first measure and then hit + to tie them. Seems like there should be an easier way. Am I missing an easier way?

Programmers insist this is by design no matter how strange. If you want a 2 beat chord that crosses the bar line you have to enter it as a one beat chord then press + to get the rest of the chord entered. It's not terrible once you get used to it.

It's weird that entering a single half note or chord within a measure works one way, but entering a half note that crosses measures only works for single notes. I'm assuming this is a "technical By Design", not a "UX By Design".

There is no need to exit note input mode. To enter a 2 beat ACE (A minor) chord on beat 4 while in note entry mode enter:

  • 5
  • A
  • shift+C
  • shift+E (you have the 1 beat chord at this point)
  • "+" (You now have two one beat chords tied to each other)
