Convert time signature while keeping same bar value for notes
I want to convert a piece from 6/8 to 4/4, but is there a way to automatically retain the note values (e.g. dotted crotched -> minim)?

No. There is a halftime plugin that could be modified for this in version 2. It should shortly be possible to do this in version 3 also. https://musescore.org/en/project/halftime-musescore-2
