What are the strange rests at the end of the measure?
I apologize if this is just my ignorance. As I write my score, notes add up to the time signature 4/4), but I end up with rest marks with which I'm not familiar stuck at the end of the measure. See the attached example. What are they? Why are they there? How do I make them go away? Does it have to do with two voices? (I'm trying to write with only one voice for this stave.)
Thanks in advance for guidance.

Those are very short rests. As for why they are there, we'd need to see the actual score, not just a picture, to understand better. And ideally, the steps you used to enter the notes. It definitely seems like you did something wrong involving the multiple voices, but I can't be sure what.
Looks like you had a corrupt measure and used exchange voices twice to try to fix it. Looks like you will need to reenter the measure for it to be correct.
Thanks to all for your prompt and courteous responses. True confession: I entered the score using the convert PDF routine which worked OK, but I have a number of things to fix. Following the advice of one of the comments, I inserted a new measure, copied the clean staves and entered the one with the mystery rests manually. Perfect. Lesson learned. Thanks again to all.

I suspected this was a result of PDF import. You can expect thing like this as a result of PDF import.
