Curious observation in Styles-Text tracking

• Feb 19, 2019 - 16:36

In attempting to understand MuseScore 3.0 and Styles, I have recently observed that some of the Text styles (not all) are displayed with different attributes, depending on the method used to select the Text style. The Text styles that I have identified that demonstrate discrepant attributes are: Bend, Footer, Hairpin, Header, Let Ring, Ottava, Palm Mute, Pedal, and Volta. The two methods to access the attributes of the Text style were:
1. Select the "Text Styles" item, then select "Title" style, and then using the down-arrow to go down the list to view the attributes.
2. Select the "Text Styles" item and then go directly to the Text style to be viewed.

One would think both paths to the Text style attributes would yield the same result.

One item of note is that the Header of the saved Styles file indicated" xml version = "1.0", encoding = "UTF-8", MuseScore version = "3.01"

Yes, similar, but different. My observations cause me to have concerns about how the MuseScore application tracks to what I am assuming are Text style subroutines. The App seems to interpret the two paths to the Text styles differently. Is this confusion also being experienced when entering a score, saving the score, and/or reloading the score?
Using the two different paths to view the Text styles, for font size, Hairpins and Volta were the only discrepancies observed. Most discrepancies were related to Offset not being the same depending on the path used to view the Text style attribute. Some Text styles also revealed discrepancies in horizontal and vertical alignment: Bend; Footer; Hairpins; Header; Let Ring; Ottava; Palm Mute; Pedal; and Volta.

Note: My observations have been made on a newly loaded MuseScore 3.0.2 and Styles as loaded with the App and subsequently saved as a Styles file. There are additional discrepancies in the saved Styles file that I am hoping are due to the lack of repeatable Text style tracking in the App itself.

What I can tell you without further investigation is that until relatively recently in the development, a handful of text styles shared a few common defaults for certain values because it was assumed there would be no need to control them independently. Eventually, we moved toward just making all the styles have independent control over everything. My guess is that somehow, the values you see not updating properly are the ones that partially fell through the cracks.
