beaming across a system break

I've been able to create beams that cross barlines, but not system breaks, as in the following example:

Is there a way to do this? Whenever I have a cross-barline beam and cause a system break (either by inserting one explicitly or by a change in formatting such as increasing stretch), the beam turns back into a pair of flags.
