Is there any way of using the TAB font in stave text? This would enable me to make bold fret numbers.
You can do it for the selected single element in the inspector (->View ->Inspector or just press F8). For a scorewide setting you could also edit the text style for staff text (->Format ->Styles ->Text Styles -> Staff Text edit.)
In both dialogs you could also set ANY font to be bold, independently from the used font itself.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately MS does not offer the "MuseScore Tab Sans" font in the inspector or in the style editor.

"MScoreBC" and "MScoreTabulature" are both available

Just tried these fonts but they are nothing like Musescore Tab Sans. MScoreBC is interesting but can't be assigned as a font for tablature in the stave setup.
However, I have zoomed FreeSans to 400% to compare with Musescore Tab Sans and they appear to be identical, at least in the range 0-9 which is all I need for fret numbers. I'll have a play with this manually, (offset and shade of grey), and if it works I'll see about automating it with a plugin.

Well, I got a bold result by making the TAB fret invisible and applying a text with FreeSans bold. Now to find out how to write a plugin!
