Changing an instrument's tuning midway?
I'm trying to write some tab, and it requires that one of the strings on my instrument be tuned to a different note halfway through the piece. How do I accomplish that when I write it?

Use an Instrument change. And that change instrument, which could be the saame as before, then should be able to have a different tuning

You can't access the staff/part properties after an instrument change so you can't retune a string mid way through a score. You will have to use multiple instruments. After the notes are all entered you can use Format->Style... and check Hide Empty staves and also uncheck the option below that that says something like Don't hide staves in first system.

So if I can hide the empty staves, is there a way to combine the two instruments into one staff while keeping the changed tuning?

It will give the appearance of a staff change if you put the system breaks in the correct spot. There is or was a way to make them look like a single staff in the middle of a system using frames, but I'm not sure how to do that.

a system break would, but also a horizontal frame mid-staff (which you could then set to a width of 0)

Probably possible anyway, by hand-editing the mscx file

Those sound like great ideas... I just don't know how to do either of those things. I think I understand what you're saying, I just don't know how to execute them.

That manual editing seems not to work...
