play button and synthesizer grayed out

I recently downloaded Musescore 3 onto my windows 10 machine, and it looks really neat. Until I realized I couldn't use the playback button, or the synthesizer. Both of the buttons are grayed out and inaccessible. I've tried restarting my computer, re-installed it multiple times, and checked the preferences-->I/O and nothing is selected and the drop down menus won't work. I've also tried checking the forums, and couldn't find a solution. Can someone help?
