Pitch input using USB keyboard

I’m a newbie to Musescore and have been using my keyboard successfully to input pitches into GarageBand. So yesterday I downloaded the latest Musescore. I can’t figure out how to make the keyboard work. Is there a trick t o this? I’m just getting silence.
