Break within a measure

I've been studying the handbook but I'm not finding success in inserting a break within a measure. My song has a pick-up note at the beginning of each phrase and I'd like the text to line up, starting at the left of each section, and ending at the right hand of each section. Can anyone give me some tips on breaking a measure so that it spans two sections? Thanks

Select the note you want to start a new measure and use tools->Measures->Split measure before selected note.
