Guitar palm-mute
Could guitar/palm-muted playback be achieved using a similar method to trumpet muting, bass guitar technique -switching, and synthesizer voicing? If the 'Palm Muted Guitar' patch were added to guitars as another channel, one could then use text to switch between muted and open strings, rather than having to add numerous instrument switches or a whole other dedicated palm-mute playback staff.

It's possible with a non-GM standard sound font and an instrument defined to have a channel for that option. There was talk at one point of adding several channels to the guitar for this purpose and at least one channel to other instruments but the idea died.

Oh, I didn't realize that the bass guitar stuff was a GM thing. R.I.P.

Actually I think the palm mute sound is GM #29. I didn't realize it until I just looked. Here's a link to the list of GM sounds: https://www.midi.org/specifications-old/item/gm-level-1-sound-set
I believe that channel had been added to (electric/steel strung) guitars a while ago. See https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/3500

Can confirm that this is the case. I suppose that changes the issue I've found: the three Guitar presets in the New Score 'Solo' drop down don't seem to be up-to-date with this feature... might be something to look into.

True, those are lacking them. See https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/pull/5236
Yes, extra channels are now available:
'Child tracks' are also shown in the Mixer:
