For now the default shortcut to "add brackets to element" is the opening parenthesis "(", and there is no default to "add parenthesis to element".
This was added following issue #288422: Set default shortcut to "add brackets to element"
I believe the default for the "add parenthesis" should be the opening parenthesis "(", and the default for the "add brackets" should be (why not?) the closing parenthesis ")".

Actually, the default shortcut for "add parentheses to element" is the opening parenthesis "(", and there is no default for "add brackets to accidental". It is different for you, because you have set the shortcut for "add brackets" to the opening parenthesis, which effectively unset the shortcut for "add parentheses". If it makes sense to you to set the shortcut for "add brackets" to the closing parenthesis, go ahead and do so. For me, it makes more sense to have that shortcut be the opening bracket "[".

You are right for that, I just remembered I had modified it before issue #288422: Set default shortcut to "add brackets to element"
The problem for that opening brackets "[" shortcut is that in many languages, the opening bracket is not easily available from the keyboard.
But I guess the brackets around elements aren't used that often anyway.
