I open a multi page score & wish to view the pages side by side, when I click on view side by side, I get a duplicate of the whole score to the right of the original version & the pages are stacked Hora Staccato.mscz

side by side is for having more that one score next to one another.
Or indeed to have the same score visible twice, for easy copy/paset or comparison of one section to another
For a single score side-by-side in the sense that all pages are shown horizontally is the default anyhow
One of the options in the zoom dropdown is "Two pages", this will show two pages of the score on a single page. Use this rather than view documents side by side (or view documents stacked), which opens a new view of scores that allows you to view the same or different scores according to which tabs you have selected.
