Can't add melisma underscores when adding lyrics to rests

Rests are created to go with the rhythm of the song.
Select rest.
"Control L" to add lyrics "A - ma - zing" after the "z" in "zing" hold "shift" and tap "-" to add the melisma underscore. No melisma appears.

This is being used as a go-around to write beginner piano music that has lyrics that need to follow melody in both the base and treble clefs.
