One flag for multiple-note chord in choral

• Oct 27, 2019 - 21:52

I am scoring a choral song with three notes (voices) per staff. The notes are mostly eighth notes, with a single flag. When I add the second and third voices, each note keeps its own flag, so the flags overlap. The eighth notes end up looking like 1/32 notes -- because it looks like they have three flags instead of one. Is there some way to merge the flags? I want it to look like a normal piano-like chord, but this is a choral piece. Pic is example of the problem.

That is beams, not flags.
Anyway, looks like the stem directions are wrong on some of them or that you should be using chords rather than voices

Since there are three voices here, instead of two, using opposing stem directions doesn't really help that much. Entering as chords is an option, I guess. But I was scoring choral parts, so I was constructing with "voices" instead of chords. shrug I'll give chords a try.

Don't think fo the word "voices" in this context as having anything to do with whether the music happens to be for singers or instrumentalists. It's about one thing only: whether you need to show different independent rhythms on the same staff. If the rhythms are the same, you normally should not be using multiple voices. At the most you might use two voices (1 & 2) with opposite stem directions just for consistency with other measures where multiple voices are actually needed. But definitely you should not be using multiple voices with stems in the same direction.
